AI applications

This is a list about AI/machine learning applications in the spirit of "What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?". It's not all chatbots, AI-generated "art" with 7-fingered hands, and deepfakes (and it's all arguably still relatively early days, but I've focused on examples of things already happening).
  1. Helping to prevent starvation.
  2. Having electronic devices.
  3. Having energy.
    • Top 10 applications of AI in the energy sector. "Artificial intelligence is currently being used in renewable energy and in the energy sector as a whole, helping increase efficiencies and reduce costs. Here’s how: Smart grids / Demand response management / Predictive maintenance / Renewable energy forecasting / Energy storage / Carbon Capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) / Energy trading / Smart homes and buildings / Oil and gas exploration / Nuclear power plant monitoring"
    • Engineers use AI to wrangle fusion power for the grid. "In experiments at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, the researchers demonstrated their model, trained only on past experimental data, could forecast potential plasma instabilities known as tearing mode instabilities up to 300 milliseconds in advance. While that leaves no more than enough time for a slow blink in humans, it was plenty of time for the AI controller to change certain operating parameters to avoid what would have developed into a tear within the plasma’s magnetic field lines, upsetting its equilibrium and opening the door for a reaction-ending escape."
  4. Reducing death and disease.
    • Artificial intelligence tool rules out COVID-19 within an hour in emergency departments. "Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool for rapidly detecting COVID-19 in people arriving at a hospital’s emergency department. The tool can accurately rule out infection within an hour of a patient arriving at hospital, significantly faster than the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test that has a turnaround time of typically 24 hours."
    • 10 real-world examples of AI in healthcare. "1. Improving precision in patient positioning and CT image reconstruction / 2. Speeding up image acquisition in MR / 3. Taking the complexity out of ultrasound measurements / 4. Helping radiologists read images faster and more accurately / 5. Supporting multidisciplinary collaboration in cancer care / 6. Guiding physicians during minimally invasive surgical procedures / 7. Detecting early signs of patient deterioration in the general ward / 8. Minimizing equipment downtime through predictive maintenance / 9. Forecasting and managing patient flow to streamline hospital operations / 10. Monitoring cardiac patients remotely for timely diagnosis and care"
  5. Improving traffic and public transport.
    • AI in Traffic Management: 5 Effective Ways. "1. The Role of AI in Traffic Management / 2. Traffic Flow Optimization / 3. Reducing Congestion / 4. Improving Safety / 5. Environmental Benefits"
    • How AI and machine learning enhances the safety, efficiency and passenger comfort of public transport. "Video analytics is bringing tangible benefits in these areas. Through collaboration, Nomad Digital is participating in work to monitor rail infrastructure using externally facing on-board cameras and monitoring systems in conjunction with enhanced GPS analytics provided by Cordel. This is being used to monitor the state of overhead catenary lines using Incremental Solutions OLErt system, pantograph equipment and trackside railway equipment, or to detect external situations like overhanging vegetation or graffiti on infrastructure."
  6. Building things.
